This part of the city is made up of large square blocks with capacious courtyards. These are private spaces but residents and visitors lives are visible.
It is surprisingly quiet – but some domestic noises – people downstairs are drinking coffee and talking, someone somewhere is cleaning, tidying, mopping. The sound of the city is pervasive – traffic, cars, buses, bicycles – there are road repairs outside and building work going on at the far right corner of the square.
The public life outside does not remain outside – I can’t see it, but I can hear it.
