8. Electrosmog (and the Electromagnetic Transducers)

Brett Mommersteeg

There’s an entire ocean of electric waves that travels through the air. Our cities are awash with these undulations. Our urban experiences are more and more modulated through them. The air is full of unheard voices, invisible images, compressed data. There’s an entire ocean of waves that travels through the air that go unnoticed even – or especially – when we are connected to them.

In our research, we have met groups of individuals who are affected by this ocean of electric waves – what they call ‘electrosmog’ – and who allow us to take notice, to pay attention to them. Their statements and grievances seek to render them sensible for those who do not notice them. They, in a way, are electromagnetic transducers that render these invisible and seemingly imperceptible forces audible. Like their protests, the transducers convert one wave – electromagnetic – into another – sound.

You can hear these oceans of electric waves now. Pay attention.
